Champak or Champaca Magnolia
Scientific name: Magnolia champaca
It is a large evergreen tree of the Magnolia family. It was previously classified as Michelia champaca. It is famous for its fragrant flowers and its wood used in carpentry.
Magnolia flowers always grow at the tips of branches and have a slender, cup-like shape. Each flower contains 6-12 petals and appears in a variety of colors from white to yellow, as well as all shades of pink and purple.
Magnolia flowers are considered one of the oldest garden flowers and are an important source of pollen for early insects, especially beetles. They often bloom at the beginning of the growing season. Garden birds can also find shelter in its branches.
It is possible to grow fragrant champak from seeds. Sandpaper is used to gently sand the seeds and make small nicks in the seeds with a knife. Then, they are soaked in hot water for 24 hours to double their size. Then they are planted in suitable soil.
