Ginkgo biloba (Scientific Name: Ginkgo biloba) is a type of plant belonging to the genus Ginkgo from the family Ginkgoaceae. It is the only remaining species from the order Ginkgoales, and plants belonging to this order were widespread in the Mesozoic Era, so this species is considered a living fossil. In Chinese and Japanese, it is written: 銀杏 (Pinyin: yín xìng, Hepburn: ichō or ginnan), in Korean: 은행 (Hangul: "eunhaeng"), in Vietnamese: bạch quả). The alternative name Ginkgo is also known as the maidenhair tree, and it is a unique type of tree, being the only surviving species of the division Ginkgophyta. It is a deciduous gymnosperm. Although it still exists in two small areas in Zhejiang Province in eastern China, it is likely that those trees have been cared for by Chinese monks for the past thousand years, and it is uncertain whether they grow in the wild or have become extinct from it.
