Date of currency origin: -1 King Abdulaziz realized the difficulty of using metal coins, so his ambition was much greater. He wanted to facilitate Hajj because pilgrims faced hardship carrying heavy silver Riyals. This was the boldest step in the Saudi monetary system. -2 This Riyal has an Islamic connection, as this receipt was inscribed with multiple phrases in Arabic, Persian, English, Urdu, Turkish, and Malay. It gained the trust of people in the local market, including merchants and citizens. -3 Hajj pilgrims welcomed and appreciated it for the light weight of the paper and ease of carrying compared to metal currency. The success of this experiment was such that citizens and pilgrims did not exchange these receipts for metal currency but continued to circulate them.
