The events of the novel The Castle take place in a village whose name we only know as 'the village', located at the foot of the hill on which the castle buildings stand. Late one winter evening, a man named K arrives after a journey on foot to work as a surveyor, based on an invitation he claims to have received from the authorities. This K knows little about the village and the castle.
