Very Old Currency

Saudi banknote 1373 AH - 1954 AD, known at the time as Pilgrim Receipts. The condition of the currency is good with some notes as shown in the pictures. The Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (now the Saudi Central Bank) issued in 1372 AH, corresponding to 1953 AD, what was then known as "Pilgrim Receipts." This was in response to the need for a more convenient and lighter means than silver riyals, especially for pilgrims who found it difficult to carry metal currency during their travels. These receipts were issued to be guaranteed in value by their equivalent in Saudi silver riyals. They carried texts in several international languages, including (Arabic, Turkish, Urdu, Persian, Malay, and English), allowing for wider use and confirming their reliability. This represented a qualitative leap in the history of Saudi currency and a preliminary step towards introducing paper currency into the financial system.
