- The Messenger of God, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, said: (Indeed, among the best of your kohl is Ithmid, it clarifies vision and grows hair). And when the Messenger of God applied kohl, he applied it three times to the right eye, starting and ending with it, and twice to the left eye [Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, and Imam Ahmad, and Al-Tirmidhi said: A good hadith]. And the best thing you can use for kohl is Ithmid [Ithmid: a black stone with a reddish hue], for it clarifies vision and grows hair. Al-Tabarani narrated from Ali bin Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, that the Messenger of God, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, said: (Use Ithmid; for it grows hair, removes debris, and clarifies vision). Imam Ahmad narrated with the men of the Sahih from Abu Hurairah, may God be pleased with him, that the Messenger of God, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, said: (The best of your kohl is Ithmid; it grows hair and clarifies vision). All these hadiths indicate that the Prophet, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, applied kohl and ordered its application. Not only that, but he specified a particular type of stone from which kohl is made, and explained the benefit of applying kohl from it. This stone is Ithmid, a known black stone with a reddish hue, found in the Hijaz region. The best of it is brought from Isfahan, and the best is that which crumbles easily, whose fragments have a sparkle, and its interior is smooth without any dirt. Ibn al-Qayyim, may God have mercy on him, said in explaining the benefit of Ithmid: Ithmid benefits the eye and strengthens it, tightens its nerves, preserves its health, and cleanses its impurities. It is the best kohl for the eyes, especially for the elderly and those whose eyesight has weakened, if mixed with musk.
