Does every behavior need reinforcement?
In ABA, there's a very important concept called:
🎯 Premack Principle
Or as it's sometimes known:
"First... Then Rule"
💡 The idea is simple:
Using an activity or behavior the child loves to reinforce another behavior they prefer less.
Meaning:
✅ We ask for the desired behavior first
✅ Then we immediately provide the preferred activity afterward
📌 Example
If the child loves playing with the tablet but dislikes doing homework:
🗣 "First, finish 5 math problems, then you can play with the tablet for 10 minutes."
Here, the:
📚 Homework = Desired Behavior
🎮 Playing with the tablet = Reinforcer
🎯 Why is it effective?
Because it relies on natural reinforcement instead of constant reliance on external rewards.
It also helps to:
✔ Increase cooperation
✔ Improve compliance with instructions
✔ Develop independence skills
✔ Reduce refusal
Important Point
For the Premack Principle to succeed, the activity used as a reinforcer must actually be preferred by the child, not just something we think they like.
