The public has gone to the permissibility of selling a cat, and they weakened the previous hadith, or interpreted the prohibition as a matter of recommendation, or concerning a harmful cat, or one that is not owned.
They supported the permissibility with what was narrated by Muslim (2619) from Abu Huraira about the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) who said: "A woman entered the fire because of a cat that she had tied up; she neither fed it nor did she allow it to roam to eat from the insects of the earth until it died of starvation."
They said: The origin of the "lam" is ownership, meaning his statement: (a cat that belongs to her). Anything that is owned and can be benefited from can be sold. See: "Kashaf al-Qina" (3/ 153).
Ibn Qudamah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "As for the cat, Al-Khiraqi said: Its sale is permissible. This was also said by Ibn Abbas, Al-Hassan, Ibn Sirin, Al-Hakam, Hamad, Al-Thawri, Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and the companions of opinion.
