What are hyraxes

Hyraxes (or rock hyraxes) are small mammals that live in mountainous and rocky areas. They resemble rabbits in size and external appearance, but are surprisingly genetically and anatomically related to elephants and manatees. Characteristics and Features General Appearance: They have small ears and a nearly absent tail, and their bodies are covered in dense fur that protects them from weather fluctuations. Amazing Limbs: Hyrax feet have soft, sweat-secreting skin pads, which give them excellent stability and skill in climbing rocks and mountainous formations. Teeth: They have a pair of prominent front incisors in the upper jaw that resemble small elephant tusks. Size: Their length ranges between 30 to 50 cm, and their weight is around 2 to 5 kilograms. Behavior and Diet Diet: They are herbivores, feeding mainly on grasses, grains, and fruits. They can tolerate periods of drought and water scarcity due to their ability to extract fluids from plants. Reproduction: They have a long gestation period for their size (lasting between 6 to 7 months), and the female gives birth to nearly fully developed young that are capable of movement and running immediately after birth. Protection: They take shelter in rock crevices and hide from predators, and they rely on emitting loud warning sounds to their herd members when sensing danger.
