Saudi Arabia announced the launch of the Professional Master's in Teaching program. After publishing content I prepared to introduce the program, I received a question from His Eminence Sheikh and Reader Hussein Qassem, which combined Saudi and Egyptian experiences: What is the meaning of this qualification, its relation to the educational diploma in Egypt, and the extent of its requirement for teaching positions in Saudi Arabia.
The graduate possesses knowledge in their specialization, and the student needs someone to help them understand it. This is where the value of teacher preparation emerges. Hence, the discussion shifted from the degree name to its ability to qualify its holder for teaching.
Knowledge That Creates Impact
An honors graduate might master mathematics but needs to know how to explain it, how to identify the reasons for a student's struggle, and how to choose a method that helps them understand. The scientific material is fundamental, and educational qualification provides its holder with the tools to teach it.
For this reason, the National Institute for Educational Professional Development launched the program to prepare those wishing to enter the profession and enhance their readiness for practice from the outset, so that the impact of qualification reaches student learning.
What Does Professional Mean?
The adjective "professional" here refers to the focus on preparing the graduate for teaching practice and linking knowledge to application. The fruit of this preparation is evident in clear explanations, conscious participation, and the ability to monitor student learning.
This leads to the comparison raised by Sheikh Hussein: Does this path meet the purpose of the Egyptian educational diploma, or does it match it in qualification?
Comparison with the Egyptian Diploma
Sheikh Hussein's comparison with the educational diploma was close in terms of the idea of qualification. In Egypt, the General Diploma in Education provides educational preparation for graduates of non-educational specializations such as Arts, Sciences, and Fundamentals of Religion. As for the graduate of the College of Education, educational preparation is part of their original studies.
There are general, professional, and specialized diplomas whose purposes and conditions vary according to university regulations. Examples include the General Diploma at Ain Shams University, which lasts for one academic year and consists of 32 credit hours. Its published conditions include a "good" grade in the bachelor's degree in a specialization related to pre-university education curricula.
Therefore, the two paths meet in the purpose of qualification, but this does not mean the equivalence of the academic degree or the qualification itself. Recognition and equivalence are governed by regulations and competent authorities.
Who is Covered by the Program?
The program targets national cadres holding a bachelor's degree in ten announced specializations, including Mathematics, Arabic Language, English Language, Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Islamic Education, and Social and National Education, provided they meet the admission requirements. The university degree alone is not sufficient for enrollment.
It does not target current teachers in public education, according to the announced clarifications. Nor is it permissible to infer that it is mandatory for every resident applying for teaching based solely on the program announcement; the job requirements and the regulations governing them are the reference.
Study and Contracting Opportunities
The institute's website mentions that study is available in six Saudi universities, with applications open from October 4 to 10, 2026, and the program commencing on January 17, 2027. After successful completion, contracting opportunities will be available through the Educational Services Development Company, based on actual needs and criteria, without guaranteeing
