Here are the specifications of the birds for those who wish to learn about them.
This bird dramatically changes its iridescent color based on the breeding season; males display one of the most beautiful iridescent metallic color shows.
Combassou Finch's Iridescent Color:
• During the breeding season (males): The male's plumage appears jet black. However, under sunlight or direct light, this blackness magically transforms to glow with a stunning metallic sheen of royal blue or emerald green, which it uses to attract females.
• During the non-breeding season (males and females): The male loses this iridescent plumage, and its color turns dark brown, speckled with small black spots, making its appearance very similar to the female.
Key Morphological and Physical Specifications:
• Size: A very small bird, approximately the size of a zebra finch.
• Beak: Features a sturdy white or ivory-colored beak.
• Eyes and Wings: It has brown eyes, and wings and tail tend to be dark brown outside the mating season.
• Legs and Feet: The legs are reddish-brown or light pink.
Temperament and Behavior in Captivity:
• Non-aggressive: It is a completely peaceful bird and does not harm other birds, making it an ideal bird for keeping in aviaries or mixed communal cages with finches and zebra finches.
• Cold resistant: Despite its African origins, it shows good adaptability and is not significantly affected by cold weather compared to others.
• Diet: Its primary diet consists of fortified seed mixes (such as finch and canary seeds), in addition to leafy greens and boiled eggs.
